One of the materials we use in the fabrication of these sculptures is resin, chosen for its durability, versatility, and ability to reproduce intricate details. In this entry, we will explore the process behind the creation of resin molds and resin copies using 3D printing to produce the original model.
3D Model Design
Before creating the resin mold, it’s essential to have an original model of the sculpture to be reproduced. In our case, the original model is crafted using 3D printing technology. The artist designs the model in a 3D design program, ensuring all details are present and the design is suitable for 3D printing.
Printing the Original Model
Once the 3D design is complete, it is printed using a high-quality 3D printer. 3D printing allows for precision and detail in replicating the artist’s design. After printing is complete, supports are removed, and the model is cleaned.
Preparation of the Printed Model
After printing, the surface of the printed model is smoothed and perfected to eliminate any imperfections or irregularities. Ventilation channels may also be added to allow air to escape during the molding process.
Mold Creation
The next step is to create the resin mold using a molding material such as silicone rubber. The printed model is placed in a container and covered with the molding material. As the molding material cures, a flexible and durable mold forms around the printed model. Once the molding material is fully cured, the printed model is removed, leaving a hollow mold.
Resin Pouring into the Mold
With the resin mold complete, reproducing the sculpture can begin. Liquid resin is mixed with a hardener and carefully poured into the mold. It’s crucial to ensure the resin reaches all areas of the mold to capture every detail of the printed model. The resin cures within the mold, hardening and taking on the shape of the sculpture.
Extraction and Finishing
Once the resin has fully cured, it is carefully extracted from the mold. The extraction process may require some skill and patience to avoid damaging the sculpture. After extraction, imperfections are cleaned and touched up, and any burrs and ventilation channels are removed. The resulting resin sculpture is a precise and detailed replica of the 3D-printed model.
